Project Reveal: Quiet Luxury | A Gainesville Kitchen & Primary Bath

Some projects are about making dramatic changes. Others are about knowing exactly what to change and when to stop.

For this Gainesville family, the kitchen and primary bathroom were ready for an update. With two college age daughters and a home that is very much lived in, the goal was to create spaces that felt elevated and beautiful without becoming overly formal.

The answer was a quieter kind of luxury: timeless materials, thoughtful details, warm finishes, and rooms designed to feel just as good years from now as they do today.

Rethinking the Kitchen

The existing kitchen felt dated, and its orientation wasn’t making the best use of the room. An older style island and overhead cabinetry visually divided the space and made the kitchen feel smaller and more enclosed than it needed to be.

We completely reworked the kitchen design, changing its orientation and creating a much more open, functional layout.

White cabinetry keeps the perimeter bright and classic, while a rich wood island anchors the room and adds the warmth it needed. Rather than filling the kitchen with decorative moments, we focused on a few really good ones: glass front cabinetry with dark interiors, an oversized stainless range and hood, beautiful natural stone, and those mercury glass pendants over the island.

The original arched window became even more special once surrounded by the new cabinetry and handmade tile. Extending that tile across the walls gives the room texture and character without adding color simply for the sake of adding color.

It is a mostly neutral kitchen, but it certainly isn’t a boring one.

Designing for Real Life

As pretty as the kitchen is, it also needed to work for a family.

The oversized island gives everyone a place to gather while creating plenty of room for prep and serving. Storage was incorporated throughout, and dedicated wine refrigeration adds another layer of function without disrupting the cabinetry.

One of our favorite things about this kitchen is that nothing feels particularly trendy. The contrast between white cabinetry and dark wood, the warm glow of the lighting, natural stone, handmade tile, and classic millwork could have belonged in this house years ago and should still feel right years from now.

That was exactly the point.

Rethinking the Kitchen

The primary bathroom takes that same idea in an even quieter direction.

Here, the palette was intentionally restrained. Large scale marble flooring and countertops establish the room, while the dark wood vanity adds contrast and warmth. Polished nickel plumbing and lighting bring in a little shine without overpowering the softer materials around them.

A freestanding tub sits beneath the window and becomes the focal point without needing anything elaborate around it.

We added traditional wall paneling around the room to bring architectural detail to an otherwise very serene palette. The oversized mirror and tailored sconces continue that balance of traditional and clean lined design.

With so little color in the room, proportion, material, and finish become even more important. Every element has to earn its place.

Quiet Luxury at Home

“Quiet luxury” gets used a lot these days, but for us it isn’t about a particular look or how expensive something is.

It is about choosing well.

It is the warmth of wood against white cabinetry. The variation in handmade tile. Beautiful stone that doesn’t need embellishment. Lighting that becomes jewelry for a room. A floor plan that simply works better than it did before.

For this family, redesigning the kitchen and refreshing the primary bath gave two of the most used spaces in their Gainesville home an entirely new feeling without making either one feel disconnected from the house around them.

They are comfortable, polished, functional, and designed for real life.

And that may be our favorite kind of luxury.
